About
Hotdog Homewares was born in 2023, featuring fresh new designs in playful colorways and classic pieces that showcase the beauty of nature. Wood is our first love at HDHW, but we follow creativity wherever it leads us. In all that we do, thoughtful design and careful construction remain a mainstay of our process.
Woodworker and founder Rowan Hollins grew up in Southwest Virginia, watching their grandfather work in his wood shop. From a young age, they found solace in the forests around their childhood home and ease in working with their hands. Later, they earned a degree in environmental science from the University of Virginia and moved up and down the east coast, picking up training in wood shops along the way. They landed back in Charlottesville in 2020, and furnished a shop of their own, focusing on the lathe.
Lathe turning requires the maker to work as a sculptor, slowly roughing out a shape layer by layer. Each turned bowl is totally one-of-a-kind, influenced in large part by the wood itself. In every piece, Rowan works to bring out the distinctive natural features of the wood, highlighting the unique life experience of the tree.
